Athens Airport began operation on 28 March 2001, and it is the primary airport that serves Athens and the region of Attica.The fastest way to get to the city of Athens is by Metro or Suburban Rail. The airport is accessible via Metro Line 3 Agia Marina - Athens International Airport. The Suburban Rail goes to Athens Central Railway Station (Larissis Station). A single ticket from the airport to the city costs €10. Note that sometimes the machines accept cash only. You can buy a return ticket and three-day transportation in Athens for €22. There are also four bus routes that go directly to Athens and Piraeus from the airport. You can find the buses near the Arrivals Level, between Exits 4 and 5.
The airport is also connected to the three ports of Athens. To reach the port of Piraeus take metro line 3 and change at Monastiraki to metro line 1. Estimated journey time is 60 minutes. You can also take bus route X96. To port of Rafina take the direct Regional Bus Service (KTEL). The bus departs from the Arrivals Level, opposite the airport hotel (Sofitel). To Port of Lavrio take the Regional Bus Service (KTEL) which departs from the Arrivals Level, opposite the airport hotel (Sofitel). Change bus at Markopoulo. No matter how you go and where you go - you must stamp your ticket to validate it. Otherwise, you might be subjected to fines as high as 20 times the value of the ticket. Ouch.
If you prefer to travel by taxi, there’s a flat rate from the airport to the city center - €38 from 05:00 to midnight, and €54 from midnight to 05:00.
