Nice place, modern, good location

We stayed a few days after the storm, impacting the Hilton, neighborhoods, other resorts, and many roads. By the time we left roads were starting to open with the Maui DPW having removed debris.
Modern rooms with kitchens, well-designed, excellent housekeeping. Several pools, including one on the beach, 1 adult, and 1 family, along with 2 hot tubs. 5-minute drive to shopping, supermarket, and gas. 10-20 minutes for drives to restaurants and ocean tours at the marina. Many beaches, which Maui has many, are within driving distance. The staff is friendly and the concierge was very helpful.
Hotel Beach - There are 2 small beaches, which are attached to a long beach to walk in the morning. One pool is at the beach and there is a bar/restaurant there, which opens late in the afternoon. Towels for the beach and pool are provided.
Here’s the beach scoop, if you want a private small beach with not many people you have this. Step over the rocks to the right of the resort beach you have plenty of private beach to open up. We walked this each day.
If you want an action beach and white sandy beaches, you will need to drive. There is a nice whale education center to the left side of the beach, which looks like a house.
Families – The pool area has basketball and a slide. There are 2 hot tubs, one for only adults. I would suggest bringing snacks and dry foods from home as the food is expensive. Having the kitchen and supermarket close by does help with breakfast or other meals. Supermarkets in the Hawaiian Islands sell wine and spirits.
Drive time from the resort to the airport is 20 minutes. To Haleakala (10,000 ft Crater) it’s an amazing place, like being on another planet – 45-60 minutes, Marina for sailing and boating, 20 minutes, Napali Beach area (40 minutes), Ocean Vodka, nice for sunset, Lavender farm (45 minutes).
It's a nice place. I did wrestle between 4 and 5 stars, if I could do a 4.5 would hit it, but 5 is the choice.

Good not great

We loved the location. Centrally located to just about any destination you might want to visit on Maui. Kihei has a number of places to eat (I recommend the Maui Brewing Company in particular).
The resort is a work in progress. The pools were fabulous. I was able to take a yoga class a few days. The gym was sufficiently equipped. There is construction as the property is not finished.
I wasn’t happy with the beach access. It was a steep hill to go down to get to the water with no steps or any sort of rail. I can only assume that will be fixed when the property is completed.
The rooms were well appointed and designed. However I was not pleased with the cleanliness when we arrived. There was mold on the shower tiles as well as the tiles in the kitchen. And the floor was not very clean.
But we loved having a living area and the full kitchen. We had a beautiful deck to sit out on and watch the sunset.

Amazing rooms, but that's it. The overall resort is not confortable, beach access is cumbersome with a road on the middle and a tiny beach. Room service is a joke. And on a resort like this not having a restaurant and worse not proposing a nice breakfast buffet is a total nonsense. You can get a fast-food style grab and go to pay with no charm at all (and only after 8AM).

Run by folks who don't really seem to care

This is not a hotel, so do not expect a hotel-quality experience...I understand that and still gave only 2 stars.
The good: the rooms are roomy and reasonably equipped. Nothing great, but nothing lousy. The layout of the resort, for a non-hotel experience is fine. The pool has many different areas, including an adult-only area and a water slide. Location relative to Kihei is: you must drive. But that's not a biggie as you probably want to drive all over Maui or you would never stay here.
The bad: The address for the resort is on a road that does not have an entrance; so you start your trip going to the wrong place and then having to figure out where to go. The days before our arrival, there were Big Rains in Maui, so the actual main entrance was closed by a mudflow; the thing is: they did not send an email (they could have) detailing just HOW to get into the resort (it's the construction entrance). We went there with a family who is a HGV member; prior to arrival, our HGV member had called the resort and put my name and my wife's name on the reservation. We arrived at the resort before the HGV member. The check-in lady I approached said we would have to wait for the HGV member to arrive before we could get a key; my wife then went and talked to a different check-in lady who DID give us a key. That is just wildly inconsistent and not guest friendly. During our stay, the water to the resort was cut off (someone had run into a nearby fire hydrant); we noticed in our room that we had no water pressure; we called the front desk and were told maintenance would arrive "shortly". Maintenance never arrived (of course), but no one called our room to tell us what the situation was even though they knew we were concerned that we had no water pressure.
Everyone there is friendly, but, well, it's Hawaii and everyone is friendly. I feel that the resort either hired folks that couldn't get jobs elsewhere, or else management has no idea how to train staff (I suspect the latter).

A little boring

The rooms are very nice but the grounds were pretty dirty. I guess there was a flood before we arrived but nothing a pressure washer couldn't clean up.it little boring here no music at pool. They had the superbowl on the Tv but you couldn't hear it. The pool restaurant closes at 3pm. IT's super-bowl Sunday and you can't order food at the bar because they closed it early. There's no servers at the pool so if you're coming here hoping to get pool side service, then go elsewhere. The employees weren't very helpful. When we asked about the price of a cabana, the employee that was walking around the pool said he had no clue. He didn't try to find an answer. Kind of disappointed.
