A gem of a find
My partner picked it as part of a 5 hotel tour of the country. She played a blinder. Very steep slope down to the house which our mini taxi negotiated well but the tuctucs wouldn’t try; 1:4 if not 1:3 slope. I speak rudimentary Sinhala so the staff were utterly and visibly delighted with my introductions ( tip: learn just a little Sinhala and it reaps rewards). No passport or checkin needed, bags delivered to the room without us meeting the man responsible. The room (river view) was excellent, a wrap around balcony with two chairs but no light bulb (sorted on request). Only a thin sheet as normal and effective A/C. Hot tap on shower needs running for a while, it’s the one on the right! The power points are very scarce, with some round pinned ones. The tiny TV had no remote, not a problem as it needed two sockets for telly and free view box and only one socket! No minibar or kettle as per the spec.
The pool area is utterly wonderful overlooking the river. Yes, it has mozzies; it’s Sri Lanka by a river, and the few heavy showers brought them out. The pool is lovely, the decor elegant and the staff really attentive. My partner loved the food but I’m a fussybum and didn’t; the last nights compulsory buffet was poor. Yes, it needs TLC but after the 2019 bombings followed by Covid, the tourist industry is just recovering. Light bulbs missing and some imaginative electrical work visible, but otherwise a delightful hotel and a joy to stay in.
Kandy isn’t the nicest place. The Tooth Temple is not to be missed, no shoes or hats allowed. We went to 2 pubs; The Pub (excellent) and the Jail bar ( cheap and sold us beer on a Poya day ) Tuctucs at the tourist spots do NOT negotiate so don’t try (although I got a 1200/- trip negotiated down to 600/- by speaking Sinhala), always use the PickMe app as the best and cheapest. The Royal Botanical Gardens are utterly wonderful so do not miss them.
